Situated in East Africa, Tanzania is a beautiful country with a rich mix of natural assets and landscapes. Snowcapped Mt Kilimanjaro, the tallest mountain on the African continent, towers majestically over the horizon, flamingos stand sentinel in the salt pans of the Ngorongoro Crater, wildebeest thunder by the thousands over the Serengeti Plains, and Indian Ocean breezes caress the white sands of Zanzibar’s Spice Islands.

Child Poverty in Tanzania
However, amidst these natural wonders 74% of Tanzanian children live in multidimensional poverty, while 29% of Tanzanian children live in households below the monetary poverty line and 26% of children experience both monetary and multidimensional poverty.

The country’s 1,200 USD Gross National Income (GNI) per capita is less than 1.6% of the GNI per capita in the USA. It is one of the lowest in the world. (Source: World Bank - 2022).

Adult HIV prevalence in Tanzania is estimated at 4.5% (UNAIDS 2021), and this is a vast improvement on the 9% prevalence from a decade ago, as new diagnoses have reduced each year. While twelve African countries have committed to end AIDS suffering for children by 2030, currently only 52% of children living with HIV are on life-saving treatment, far behind adults where 76% receive antiretrovirals. AIDS has claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in Tanzania, leaving 1.2 million children orphaned; HOCODECO and Hope Academy exist to help these children and their communities in their search for hope and a brighter future.
